Formed after a volcanic eruption caused by one of the Calena Volsini Mountains, Bolsena Lake is considered the largest volcanic lake in Europe.
Here the landscape is completely unspoilt and the lake is one of the largest in Italy.
It’s sparkling clear waters are home to many different types of plant and animal species that are unique to this part of Tuscany.
Bolsena has two islands: Bisentina and Martana.
The Bisentina Island is the largest and is famous for its untouched scenery and beautiful landscapes.
Martana Island, located opposite to the town of Marta, is protected by the remains of the Santa Cristina Castle, which was once to used to keep out the Barbarians.
Unfortunately this castle is not open to the public as it is private property.
